Connecticut's cemeteries are among the oldest in the country: Grove Street in New Haven, Cedar Hill in Hartford, and the village burying grounds with slate stones from the 1700s. The state runs its own veterans cemetery in Middletown. Families who moved to New York, Boston or Florida keep parents buried here.

Winters are long and snowy, summers are short and pleasant, and the ground is frozen from December into April. Spring (April to May)

Cemeteries clear winter decorations and open the vases once the ground thaws, usually in April. Deliveries placed after the clean-up stay through summer.

Summer (June to September)

The easiest season here. Weekly mowing means flowers go in the vase or on the stone. Silk holds its color through the short summer with little fading.

Fall (October to November)

Mums and harvest colors before the leaves come down. Most cemeteries clear decorations in November ahead of snow; deliver after, or plan for the holiday arrangement.

Winter (December to March)

Snow cover for months. Vases are stored; a saddle on an upright stone or an evergreen arrangement against it stays visible above the snow. Some cemeteries close interior roads; Runners time deliveries around plowing.
