Nevada's cemeteries sit in desert sun: the memorial parks of Las Vegas and Henderson, Reno's Mountain View, the mining-town graveyards of Virginia City and Tonopah, and the Southern and Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemeteries in Boulder City and Fernley. Most of the state's residents came from somewhere else, and their families are still there.
Desert sun is the main thing at a grave here: it fades color faster than anywhere else in the country. Every arrangement is hand-crafted in UV-resistant outdoor silk, and lighter colors last longest. Spring (February to April)
The best season at the grave: mild, bright and busy with Easter and Mother's Day visits. Cemeteries do their main clean-up around March.
Summer (May to September)
Extreme heat and sun. Fresh flowers last hours; silk in whites, yellows and blues fades slowest. Runners deliver early in the day.
Fall (October to November)
Temperatures ease and cemeteries fill again. Mums and harvest colors for Thanksgiving hold well in the dry air.
Winter (December to January)
Mild and sunny. Holiday arrangements last well into the new year; national cemeteries are inside their silk window.
