Montana's cemeteries are a long way from each other and from the families that left: Billings, Missoula, Great Falls and Butte, the ranch-country plots of the east, Yellowstone National Cemetery in Laurel, and the Custer National Cemetery on the Little Bighorn battlefield. Altitude means snow can come early and stay late, with intense sun in between. Every arrangement is hand-crafted in outdoor silk, seated so wind cannot move it. National cemeteries in Montana

Fresh flowers are welcome at a national cemetery any day of the year. Silk arrangements are placed in the permitted windows: the winter months and about ten days either side of Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Your Runner follows each cemetery's posted dates.

Spring (April to June)

The thaw comes late at altitude; most cemeteries clean up in May. Deliveries placed after it stay through the short summer.

Summer (July to September)

Bright, dry sun fades reds fastest; whites, yellows and blues hold. Flowers belong in the vase or on the stone during mowing season.

Fall (October)

Short. Mums and harvest colors go in early; many cemeteries clear before the first snow in late October.

Winter (November to April)

Long snow cover. A saddle on an upright stone or an evergreen arrangement against it stays visible above the drifts; vases are stored until spring.
