Florida buries more people from other states than anywhere in the country. Retirees from the Northeast and Midwest rest in memorial parks from Jacksonville to Miami, and in nine national cemeteries: Florida National in Bushnell, Bay Pines, Sarasota, South Florida, Cape Canaveral, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, St. Augustine and Barrancas in Pensacola. Their children are usually a thousand miles away.

Summers are long, hot and humid, which is why every arrangement is hand-crafted in outdoor silk: it is still in place and still in color when the family visits at Thanksgiving. Fresh flowers are welcome at a national cemetery any day of the year. Silk arrangements are placed in the permitted windows: the winter months and about ten days either side of Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Your Runner follows each cemetery's posted dates.

What holds up, and when the grounds crews clear, in this climate.

Spring (March to May)

The spring clean-up lands in March at most cemeteries. Easter and Mother's Day deliveries placed after it stay for months. Pollen coats everything for a few weeks; a rinse restores a silk arrangement.

Summer (June to September)

The hardest season. Fresh flowers last a day; silk in yellows, whites and blues fades slowest in the sun. Weekly mowing means flowers belong in the vase or on the stone, never on the grass. Hurricane season can close coastal cemeteries for a few days.

Fall (October to November)

The best months at the grave. Mums and harvest colors for Thanksgiving; many cemeteries clear summer decorations in October, so deliver after.

Winter (December to February)

Mild and wet. Holiday arrangements placed in early December hold through New Year; national cemeteries are inside their silk window all winter.

Questions about Florida deliveries

Do you deliver to any cemetery in Florida?

Yes. City, county, church, private memorial parks and the veterans cemeteries. Give us the cemetery name and the name on the headstone; a Find a Grave link helps the Runner find the grave.

Can you place silk flowers at Barrancas National Cemetery?

In the permitted windows: roughly mid-October through mid-April and about ten days either side of Easter, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Fresh flowers are welcome any day. Your Runner follows the posted dates.

How long do the flowers last in Florida?

A silk arrangement placed in June is still in place and in color in September, which fresh flowers cannot do in this heat. Lighter colors fade slowest in full sun.

Will I know the flowers were placed?

A photo of the arrangement at the headstone is emailed to you after every delivery and added to the memorial page for the family.
