Virginia has Arlington National Cemetery and eighteen more national cemeteries, more than any other state, from Quantico and Culpeper to Hampton, Richmond and the Civil War grounds of the Shenandoah. Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Blandford in Petersburg and the church graveyards of Tidewater hold the rest.

What holds up, and when the grounds crews clear, in this climate.

Spring (March to May)

The spring clean-up comes in late March or April. Easter and Mother's Day deliveries placed after it stay through summer.

Summer (June to September)

Hot and humid, with weekly mowing. Flowers belong in the vase or on the stone; lighter silk colors fade slowest.

Fall (October to November)

Mums and harvest colors for Thanksgiving. Many cemeteries clear in November before leaf removal; deliver after.

Winter (December to February)

Snow and freeze-thaw. Turning vases are stored upside down; a saddle or a staked arrangement against the stone stays above the snow. Silk does not mind the cold.
