Cemetery Rules
Can You Visit a Cemetery at Night? Cemetery Hours Explained
Most cemeteries close at dusk or at posted hours. What typical cemetery hours are, why gates close, and how to visit early, late or on a holiday.
In most cemeteries, no. The usual rule is open from dawn to dusk, or set hours posted at the gate, and being inside after closing can count as trespassing. That surprises people who work long days and can only visit in the evening, so it is worth knowing the hours before you go.
Typical cemetery hours
- Dawn to dusk is the most common rule, especially at church, municipal and rural cemeteries.
- Set hours at many larger cemeteries, often from early morning to late afternoon or early evening, sometimes with longer hours in summer.
- Office hours are usually shorter than gate hours. If you need a map or help finding a grave, arrive when the office is open.
Arlington National Cemetery, for example, is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. VA national cemeteries post their hours on their own pages.
Why cemeteries close at night
- Vandalism. Headstones and decorations are easy targets after dark.
- Safety. Uneven ground, open graves and unlit roads.
- Respect. Cemeteries are quiet places for families, and closing at night protects that.
Halloween and other evenings
Late October brings more evening visitors and more trespassing. Many cemeteries add patrols or lock gates earlier around Halloween. Some host their own evening events, such as candlelight tours or All Souls' services, which are the safe way to visit after dark.
If evenings are the only time you can visit
- Check for longer summer hours.
- Call the office; some will arrange a visit outside normal hours for a family.
- Visit on a weekend morning instead; most cemeteries open early.
If you can't get there during open hours, a BloomBridge Runner can place flowers at the grave during the day and send you a photo of the arrangement at the headstone. See the arrangements.
Mausoleums and holidays
Indoor mausoleums often keep shorter hours than the grounds and may close on some holidays. For Memorial Day and other busy days, many cemeteries extend hours instead. Our guide to cemetery etiquette covers the rest of what to know before a visit.
