Fall and Thanksgiving Flowers for a Grave: Mums, Harvest Colors and the Fall Clean-Up

Between the last summer visit and the Christmas wreath, most graves go months without flowers. Fall is when a cemetery is at its most beautiful, with the trees turning over the rows, and when a bare marker is most noticeable. A fall arrangement fills the longest gap in the year.

What families place for fall

• Chrysanthemums. The fall flower in America and the flower of the dead across much of Europe and Asia, where they are placed on graves for All Saints' Day on November 1. Bronze, gold, burgundy and white mums in a saddle or vase are the classic autumn grave arrangement.
• Harvest colors. Orange, rust, deep red and gold: sunflowers, gerberas, dahlias and berries. A small pumpkin or gourd tucked into the arrangement is common and allowed at most cemeteries if it is secured.
• Wheat and grasses. Dried wheat, pampas and eucalyptus give a fall arrangement the look of the season without loud color, for families who prefer restraint.
• A fall wreath on an easel, with leaves, berries and mums, for a family plot or a stone that takes a wreath well.

Potted mums versus silk

A potted mum from the garden center lasts three to five weeks outdoors in fall weather and then dies in its pot, which is exactly what cemetery crews clear. A silk mum arrangement placed in late September looks the same at Thanksgiving. If you are visiting, bring the potted one and enjoy it; if the flowers are being placed for you, choose silk.

The fall clean-up

Many cemeteries do a second clean-up in the fall, typically in October or early November, to clear the summer's decorations before leaf removal and winter. The timing varies: some clear before Thanksgiving, some right after, some wait until the holiday decorations come down in January. Ask the office, or read the sign, and time the fall delivery for just after the clean-up so the arrangement stays through Thanksgiving and into December.

Thanksgiving specifically

Thanksgiving is not a traditional decoration holiday the way Memorial Day or Christmas is, but it is the weekend when scattered families are back in their hometowns and visit the cemetery together. Flowers placed the week before are there for that visit. Many families use Thanksgiving as the moment to see the grave, and Christmas as the moment to decorate it; a fall arrangement covers the first and a holiday arrangement the second.

Veterans Day

November 11 falls in the middle of the fall season and is a decoration holiday at national cemeteries, which open a window for artificial flowers around it. Into winter

A fall arrangement placed in October is, in most of the country, still in good shape at the start of December, when the holiday arrangement replaces it. That two-step, fall then holiday, is the back half of a four-season plan, and the reason the grave never looks forgotten.
