Mother's Day Flowers for a Grave: Ideas, Timing and What Lasts

No day brings more people to a cemetery than Mother's Day. Cemetery offices plan for it the way retailers plan for Black Friday, and by Sunday afternoon the rows are full of color. If you cannot be there in person, flowers placed at her grave that weekend say what a visit would have said.

What families place for Mother's Day

• Her flower. The one she grew, the one she kept on the kitchen table, the one from her wedding. If you know it, that is the arrangement. Nothing else needs a reason.
• Pink and white roses. The traditional Mother's Day pairing: pink for gratitude, white for remembrance. It reads clearly from the path and looks right on any headstone.
• Peonies and hydrangeas. Full, soft and generous, the flowers of May. In silk they keep that fullness for months instead of days.
• A spring mix. Tulips, daisies and lilies in pastels, the arrangement that says spring even in a cemetery lawn that has only just turned green.

Fresh or silk for Mother's Day?

If you are visiting yourself, bring fresh flowers. Carry them in, place them, spend the time. They will be lovely for the visit and gone within the week, which is fine when the visit was the point.

If the flowers are being placed for you, choose silk. Mother's Day falls in the first warm stretch of the year in most of the country, and fresh flowers left in May sun are brown by Wednesday. Grounds crews clear wilted flowers quickly after the holiday. A silk arrangement placed that weekend is still there, still pink, when someone else in the family visits in June.

When to have flowers delivered

Plan for the flowers to be at the grave by the Friday before Mother's Day. Three reasons:

1. Siblings, grandchildren and old friends visit all weekend, not just on Sunday. Flowers placed early are there for every one of them.
2. Cemetery gates, offices and parking are at their most crowded on the Sunday itself.
3. Delivery services are at capacity the week of Mother's Day. Ordering in April, with the delivery date set, means it happens without you thinking about it again.

Many cemeteries clear all decorations in late March or April so the mowing season can start, then let families decorate again for Mother's Day. That timing works in your favor: flowers placed in early May land on a freshly tidied grave and are usually left alone through the summer. The families who feel best about Mother's Day are often the ones who have stopped treating it as the only day.
