How it works
A Sympathy Gift After the Funeral: What to Send When the Flowers Have Stopped
The hardest weeks of grief come after the funeral, when the support fades. Thoughtful sympathy gifts for a month, three months or a year later, including flowers placed at the grave.
In the week of a funeral a grieving family is buried in flowers, food and cards. Three weeks later the house is quiet, the casseroles are gone, and the phone has mostly stopped. Anyone who has been through it will tell you that is when the support was needed most. A sympathy gift sent after the funeral lands in that silence.
Why later is better
Funeral flowers are seen by the family for a day and then wilt in a house that already has too many. A gift that arrives a month later says something different: that you know grief did not end with the service, and that you are still thinking of them when most people have moved on. It is remembered far longer.
Gifts that work at one month
- Flowers placed at the grave. Not at the door, where they add to the pile, but at the grave, with a photo sent to the family. It tends the grave at a time when the family may not have been able to go back, and it asks nothing of them. Our guide to graveside delivery explains how it works.
- A meal, delivered on a specific day. Tell them which evening. The decision is the gift.
- A gift card for something practical. Groceries, a cleaning service, a lawn service. Grieving people let those things go.
- A framed photo they do not have. One from your own collection, of the person they lost, that they may never have seen.
Gifts that work at three months
- The memorial page. A place online where the family and friends can add photos and notes. BloomBridge creates one with each grave delivery; sending the link, with your own memory added, invites others to do the same.
- A donation in their name to a cause the person cared about, with a card saying so.
- An invitation. Lunch, a walk, a game. By three months, grieving people often feel forgotten. Being asked to do something ordinary matters.
Gifts that work at a year
- Flowers at the grave on the anniversary, with a note that you remembered the date. Very few people do. Our guide to the anniversary of a death has more.
- Flowers for the birthday, which the family will be marking whether or not anyone else knows.
- A standing arrangement: a plan that places flowers at the grave through the year, given as a gift. It says you intend to keep remembering.
BloomBridge lets you send flowers to any grave in all 50 states and have the delivery photo go to the family instead of to you. Many of our orders are exactly this: a friend, a month or a year on, sending what the family could not get to the cemetery to do.
What to write
Keep the card short and specific. Use the person's name. Mention one thing you remember about them. Do not say anything that starts with "at least". "I was thinking about Ray this week, and about the way he laughed at his own jokes. I had some flowers put at his grave so you would not have to make the drive. Thinking of you." That is the whole card.
What not to send
More funeral flowers to the house. Anything that needs to be cared for, including live plants, unless you know they want one. Anything that requires a thank-you note. The best sympathy gift after the funeral is one that gives, and asks for nothing back.
Flowers at the grave, wherever it is

No. A month, three months and a year are each better times than the funeral week, when the family is overwhelmed. Late gifts show the support did not end with the service.
Flowers placed at the grave, with the photo sent to the family, is the most common alternative to a bouquet at the house. A specific meal, a practical gift card, an old photo or a donation in the name are others.
