Spring Flowers for a Grave: After the Clean-Up, Before the Heat
Spring is when cemeteries clear the winter and mowing begins. The flowers that read as spring, how to time the delivery after the clean-up, and the three holidays that fall inside the season.
Spring is the season the cemetery calendar turns on. The grounds crew clears everything left from winter, the mowers come out, and for the next eight months flowers on the grass are gone within the week. It is also the season with the most visits: Easter, Mother's Day and Memorial Day fall within ten weeks of each other. Get the timing right and a spring arrangement is there for all three.
The spring clean-up comes first
Nearly every cemetery clears all decorations once before mowing season, typically in March in the South, April in the Midwest and Northeast, May at altitude. Flowers placed the week before that date last days; flowers placed the week after last months. The date is on the sign at the gate or one call away. Our guide to cemetery flower rules explains what to ask.
Flowers that read as spring
- Tulips. The most recognizable spring flower, in pink, yellow, white and red. Strong shapes that read from the path.
- Daffodils and hyacinths. Yellow and blue, the colors of an April garden, and the flowers of hope in most traditions.
- Lilies. White for Easter, the classic sympathy and resurrection flower.
- Peonies and hydrangeas. Full and soft, the flowers of May and the usual choice for Mother's Day.
- Pastel mixes. Lavender, blush, butter yellow and white together: the spring basket look, especially good in a saddle on an upright stone.
In silk, all of these keep their color through the season; the fresh versions last a few days outdoors in spring rain and wind.
Three holidays in ten weeks
Easter falls between late March and late April, Mother's Day in mid-May, Memorial Day at the end of May. A single spring arrangement placed after the clean-up and before Easter covers all three, with a patriotic touch added for Memorial Day at a veteran's grave. Families with a four-season plan usually make this the first delivery of the year. Our guides to Easter, Mother's Day and Memorial Day cover each.
Spring weather at the grave
Wind is strongest in spring across most of the country, and rain is frequent. A saddle seated on the stone, or a vase arrangement staked hard against it, stays put; a tall, loose arrangement does not. Pollen coats everything yellow for a few weeks in the South; a rinse restores a silk arrangement. Late frosts do not bother silk at all.
National cemeteries in spring
The winter window for artificial flowers closes around mid-April at most national cemeteries, and a window reopens around Easter and again around Memorial Day. Time a silk delivery for one of those; fresh flowers are welcome any day. Our national cemetery guide has the dates.
BloomBridge spring arrangements are hand-crafted in silk, placed by a local Runner after the cemetery's clean-up where the dates are known, and photographed at the headstone. See the arrangements.

The week after the cemetery's spring clean-up, which is March in the South and April further north. Placed then, they stay through Easter, Mother's Day and Memorial Day.
Tulips, daffodils, lilies, peonies and hydrangeas, in pastels or bright spring colors. Silk versions last the season; fresh ones last days.
Most likely the spring clean-up fell just after Easter that year. Check the cemetery's date and deliver after it next time.
